Residential waste collection services

We provide waste collection services to all residential properties in the city, including privately owned homes, informal settlements, backyarders, and City-owned rental stock. Our services vary according to the type of property you live in. You must apply for commercial waste collection services.

Amended refuse collection schedules

We are restructuring the refuse collection service for Dunoon from 2 September 2024.

The restructured refuse collection services for Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and Duynefontein have been in effect since 1 July 2023. View the Collection Schedule Change Notice (English | Afrikaans | isiXhosa)

If you live in one of these areas, your refuse removal schedule will change as follows:

Waste is collected once a week from Monday - Friday (including public holidays), depending on the area that you live in. View our maps to find out when waste is collected in your area.

Alternatively, you can use our Map Viewer to find out what the refuse collection day (beat) is for your property.

We will only collect the waste that is in your bin. Any extra bags left on top of, or next to the bin will not be collected. If you are producing too much waste for one bin, you can apply for a second wheelie bin.

Wheelie bins

Recycling is the best waste control solution. Follow our recycling guide for tips on how you can recycle at home. Our Waste Services Department provides each residential property with a 240-litre wheelie bin for waste disposal.

Please note

If you live in a sectional title property (e.g. a flat or townhouse) your body corporate should apply for enough wheelie bins for the complex/building. See our City-wide tariffs for more details.

Tips for bin users:

bag and seal any bandages and nappies before placing in your bin
disinfect your bin regularly
don’t put builder’s rubble (stones, rocks, sand), oil, metal (engine parts) or medical or hazardous waste in the bin - you can dispose of these items at selected facilities.
don't dispose of chemical or manufactured waste in the bin
place your bin on the pavement/ kerb from 6:00 on the scheduled collection day
seal your waste and place in the bin – not next to the bin or on the pavement
Separate your garden refuse, recyclables and builder’s rubble. Drop off your waste at your nearest municipal drop-off site

New or replacement wheelie bin

If you are renting property from us, you will need to visit your local housing office to apply for a new or replacement wheelie bin. If you are a property owner, follow the link below to find out how to apply.

If your bin is stolen or damaged on your collection day, we will replace it for free, provided you report it at the police station. If your bin is stolen or damaged on a day other than your scheduled collection day, you will need to pay the replacement tariff.

Type of waste	Includes	Guideline
WET	meat products, wet and dirty paper, wax or plastic cartons, ‘shiny’ packaging such as chip packets, cigarette butts and nappies.	Throw in your bin or black / blue bags. .
DRY	paper, cardboard, glass and cans.	Separate these from your wet waste and take to your nearest drop-off site or arrange to have it collected by a recycling company - see our Recycler’s Database .
ORGANIC	biodegradable kitchen waste like fruit and vegetables, egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, animal manure and wood ash.	Add these to your compost heap or worm farm - start composting at home.
GARDEN	lawn clippings, plant matter, soil, branches and leaves	Add these to your compost heap. Small soft cuttings and grass may be placed in your bin, or at a drop-off site.
